Buying traffic against a fold you have never cold-read is an expensive way to discover that strangers still do not know what you sell. A landing-page pre-test does not require a full research study. It requires a fold-by-fold question script and the discipline to answer it without leaking the brief — alone, with a colleague, or with a simulated audience room.

Decision rule: do not scale paid clicks until a cold reader can answer, in their own words, what the page offers, for whom, why it is credible, what it costs or commits them to, and what happens after the primary CTA.

Fold-by-fold question script

Run the page exactly as a paid visitor will see it (device, speed, cookie banner, hero crop). For each band below, ask the questions out loud and write the stranger’s answers — not yours.

Fold / bandQuestions to ask the cold readerPass signalFail → fix
0–1 screen (hero)What is this? Who is it for? What should I do next? One clear offer + audience + CTAAdd product-in-context; cut metaphor-only headlines
Social proof stripWhy should I believe any of this?Named, checkable cue (logo, metric, constraint)Replace vague “trusted by teams” with one specific proof
How it worksWhat happens after I start? How long until value?3 steps max, concrete outcomesKill jargon; show the first success state
Pricing / plan teaseWhat will this cost me — money, time, or lock-in?Price, range, or honest reason to click throughSilence reads as bad news; show something
Objections / FAQWhat would make me bounce right now?Top 3 fears answered in plain languageAdd the fear your team keeps dodging
Final CTAIf I click, what page do I expect?CTA label matches destinationAlign button copy with the next screen’s promise

Scoring (use this, not vibes)

  • Clear: cold reader answers without help.
  • Fuzzy: they hedge or invent context from category knowledge.
  • Missing: they cannot answer or answer the wrong product.

Ship-blockers: Missing on hero offer, audience, or CTA destination. Spend-blockers: Fuzzy/Missing on price/commitment or proof. Polish: FAQ tone once the above pass.

Worked pattern: beautiful hero, invisible product

What cold readers say

“Looks premium. I still don’t know if this is software, a service, or a newsletter. The button says Get started — started doing what?” That maps to hero and final-CTA fails. Media spend will amplify confusion, not convert it.

Fix order that usually works

  1. Show the product UI or deliverable in the hero — not only a lifestyle plate.
  2. Name the job-to-be-done in the subhead (one sentence).
  3. Put price, trial, or seat model where the eye goes after the CTA.
  4. Make the button label match the next screen (“Start free rehearsal” > “Get started”).

With a simulated room

Paste the URL or fold copy into a rehearsal tool and ask personas to answer the same script — especially “what is this?” and “what happens after click?” SimuCrew is built for threaded reactions to copy, images, links, or short video: useful when you want disagreement about the fold, not a single polite redesign. Pair with the pre-publish misread checklist so objections map to fix rows. Compare plans on pricing if you need link-reading and larger casts.

Monday morning (25 minutes)

  1. Open the paid landing URL in a private window on mobile.
  2. Run the fold script; mark Clear / Fuzzy / Missing without coaching.
  3. Fix ship-blockers only — one pass.
  4. Optional: rehearse the fold on SimuCrew and tag objections to the same bands.
  5. Re-score. If hero offer is still Missing, do not raise bids.

Next step

Drop in a draft and read the room before you publish. Three free rehearsals — no card.
