Same-cast A/B: compare ad versions with AI personas

A same-cast A/B protocol for AI personas — freeze the cast, change one variable, diff objections — instead of opening a new chatbot chat each time.

Comparing two ad versions with AI personas only works if the room stays still. Open a fresh chatbot chat for version A and another for version B and you have not run an A/B — you have run two unrelated vibes. Same-cast A/B freezes the cast, changes one variable, and diffs the objections so the edit list is attributable.

Protocol in one line: freeze cast → change one variable → diff objections. Anything else is a demo, not a comparison.

Same-cast A/B protocol

StepWhat you doPass ruleCommon failure
1 — Freeze castLock the same persona set, size, and brief for both runsCast ID / roster written down before run ARe-rolling a “better” cast between A and B
2 — One variableChange only headline, visual crop, CTA, or claim line — not all fourDiff log names exactly one changed fieldNew offer + new hero + new CTA in the same “test”
3 — Same questionAsk the room the identical written question both timesQuestion pasted from a shared brief, not improvisedCoaching version B after you disliked A’s answers
4 — Diff objectionsTable ship-blockers and spend-blockers for A vs B; ignore praise fluffAt least three attributable objection deltasPicking the “nicer” transcript without a delta list
5 — Edit onceShip the survivor’s fix list; optional second same-cast passOne edit cycle tied to the delta listEndless re-rolls until the room sounds friendly

Why freezing the cast matters

Persona pools and thread planners introduce variance. If cast and question move with the creative, you cannot tell whether version B “won” because the headline improved or because a different skeptic showed up. Same-cast A/B is the creative analogue of holding the sample frame still in research ops — directional, not statistical proof, but at least comparable.

What counts as “one variable”

  • Headline or primary on-screen text — visual crop held constant.
  • Visual subject / crop — headline held constant.
  • Primary claim line — offer and CTA held constant.
  • CTA label or destination — creative body held constant.

Changing price, audience, and visual together is a new concept test, not same-cast A/B. Run that as a separate brief with its own freeze — or you will argue about which field “caused” the room’s reaction.

Vs opening a new ChatGPT chat each time

A general assistant like ChatGPT is useful for drafting and solo critique. It is a weak A/B harness when each version starts a new chat: tone drifts, disagreement flattens, and you cannot attribute objection changes to the creative alone. A dedicated simulated comment room keeps a cast reacting in nested threads — the comparison artifact is the objection delta, not a polite paragraph that liked both ads.

For the broader category contrast (one polite answer vs a disagreeing thread), see ChatGPT vs a simulated comment room. For where same-cast rehearsal sits in a media stage-gate, see AI creative testing before the media buy.

Objection diff sheet (template)

Objection themeVersion AVersion BAction
Product identity unclearYes / No + quote stubYes / No + quote stubRewrite if either fails
Hostile claim reading……Source or soften the claim
Wrong audience assumed……Tighten who it’s for
CTA / next-step confusion……Align label with destination
New theme only in one version……Keep if useful; kill if ship-blocker

Fill the sheet before you declare a winner. “B felt warmer” is not a delta.

How to pick a survivor (without fake percentages)

  1. Count ship-blockers (identity / claim / CTA) on A and on B.
  2. Prefer the version with fewer ship-blockers after one honest pass — not the friendlier tone.
  3. If ship-blocker counts tie, prefer the version whose top objection is cheaper to edit.
  4. If both still carry ship-blockers after one edit cycle, stop the A/B — fix the brief.

Do not invent win rates (“B won 70% of personas”). Same-cast rehearsal is for editable objection language. Live traffic and, where needed, human research still decide spend.

What SimuCrew is for here

SimuCrew casts 20–100 AI personas in a threaded comment section — a rehearsal crew for copy, image, link, or short video. Use the same cast size and brief across A and B; change one creative field; extract the objection diff. Free Read-through includes 3 rehearsals (up to 30 voices). It is not a survey panel and not a conversion forecast. More on the category: audience simulation hub.

When not to run same-cast A/B

  • You have not passed a cold-read identity check on either version — fix Gate 1 first.
  • Legal or medical claim language is in dispute — counsel owns substance; rehearsal only clarifies wording after sign-off.
  • You need population preference shares for a board deck — recruit humans or run live traffic; do not dress a delta sheet as a survey.
  • The “versions” differ by brief, audience, and offer — that is a new concept, not an A/B.

Same-cast A/B is a discipline for comparable objection language. It is not a shortcut past research ops when the decision requires authority beyond directional screening.

Monday morning (35 minutes)

  1. Pick two versions that differ by exactly one field. Write that field in the brief.
  2. Freeze cast size and question text. Do not improvise between runs.
  3. Run A, then B on SimuCrew (or an equivalent same-cast room).
  4. Fill the objection diff sheet; pick the survivor by ship-blockers removed — not by praise volume.
  5. One edit pass on the survivor; only then schedule a small live split if spend is planned.
